Álvaro was born in Lima, Peru, in 1970. After graduating from Markham College, he studied Communications in Lima and then pursued design studies at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in the USA. Upon his return, he worked at various advertising agencies, eventually becoming Creative Director at Y&R, Ogilvy, DDB, and Bates. In 2001, he decided to pivot his career and traveled to Cuba to study film at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños. From that moment on, he began achieving significant success. In 2003, he started directing advertising films, and in 2005, he won Gold across the entire advertising festival circuit with the "Magia" commercial for Leo Burnett Peru. He has also won numerous awards, including those from Cannes, London, San Sebastián, Clio, Ojo de Iberoamérica, New York Festivals, the Andy Awards, and more. He was even inducted into the FIAP Hall of Fame for directing the most highly awarded commercial in Latin American history. His recent projects have been recognized at Cannes Lions, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the New York Festivals, with work for Tic Tac and Consejo de la Comunicación, in addition to awards from Círculo Creativo de México. His directing style is visionary, characterized by a strong narrative approach and a deep passion for storytelling. Versatile and passionate, he possesses a great sense of humor and a particular sensitivity that brings integrity to each project he directs. He consistently strives to elevate the script in collaboration with the creators of the ideas. His reel showcases humor, emotion, animals, tabletop techniques, and a wide variety of formats. He currently resides in Mexico and works for markets including Venezuela, Panama, Peru, and Mexico. He recently signed a representation agreement with Aylene Gardiner for the Eastern European, Middle Eastern, and Asian markets. In 2019, he developed the documentary "Autopsia Social" for Mexican television, a project that immersed him in the world of disappearances and human trafficking in Mexico. With 20 years of experience, Álvaro is a well-rounded, mature, and accomplished director.
